Purpose
This set of tools lives in a yellow toolbox on the crafts shelves. The toolbox contains all the tools needed to do linoleum block printing, including Linoleum blocks, gouges for carving the blocks, inks, brayers for spreading the ink on the blocks evenly, and an ink tray.
How-To
- Draw your design on paper, using a graphite pencil.
- Place the drawn image on the block, graphite side touching the linoleum surface, and rub the back of the paper to transfer the image from the paper to the block mirrored.
- Use the gouges to carve out the negative space in the design, leaving the positive space untouched. Ink will only be applied to the surfaces that have NOT been carved away.
- When you are done carving and ready to print, choose your color and thoroughly shake/mix the ink, it separates over the course of a few months.
- Place a glob of ink the size of a quarter on the clear plastic ink tray, and roll the brayer back and forth over it, alternating directions, till the ink is evenly spread on the roller and well mixed.
- Place the block on a table, carved image side up, and roll the ink onto it with the brayer, thoroughly covering your image in a uniform layer of ink
- Lay the paper or other material you are printing on onto the block, using a rolling motion to apply it from one side to the other, to allow any air to escape as the paper is applied to the block.
- gently apply pressure from the back of the paper, then peel the paper up off the block and allow to dry
- make as many prints as you like, and clean all tools with water and dish soap to remove the ink
