This page is to document this initial build of the Shapeoko which was one of the requirements of the Hive receiving it.

On June 2nd, 2014 it was announced that HIVE13 won a ShapeOko 2 CNC machine kit in the Inventables 50 States 3D Carving Machine Giveaway contest. (Announcement link)

The ShapeOko is a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine which in its default configuration uses a light-duty rotary tool as the spindle. It is a 3-axis machine; able to move the mounted tool up/down, left/right, and forward/backward under computer control with some measure of repeatable precision.

Standard G-Code is used for motion commands, using either Imperial or metric units. It uses Stepping Motors which are controlled by Stepping Drivers attached to an Arduino Microcontroller which is running the Grbl G-Code interpreter. The giveaway includes beta access to Inventable's Easel free cloud based app for design and fabrication, which goes full public later this summer.
