- Jim and others: Detroit Maker Faire recap
- Power tool drag racing happened!
- Did not have enough entrants for a bracket.
- Harbor freight house bots gave their all.
- People had fun.
- "Maker of Merit" and "awesome" badges-- we got some ribbons...
- Lots of cool stuff--flaming ski-ball, etc.
- Cincinnati maker faire is next drag race.
- Jon--perhaps we should do a build night, with tools ready to go.
- Jon- space updates.
- large format printer deal finally worked out. $1250.
- they will pick it up!
- tool posts for lathe--not yet ordered, but it will happen.
- large format printer deal finally worked out. $1250.
- CAC night happened
- It was a success.
- Twist--will try to keep relationship going.
- Twist--request for comments on welding aluminum on mailing list.(not a ton of interest)
- equipment would be about $300.
- TIG welding aluminum may be easier, and we may be getting one of these...
- Discussion: Better ventilation for welding room
- Will--could we get a whole house fan?
- some discussion followed about what we would need, what size, etc.
- Jim--for TIG, we don't want TOO much air flow.
- Dave--why not just ask a welding shop for advice
- Dave--if someone is getting a TIG welder here, lets' just go with that for aluminum.
- Elizabeth has donated an argon bottole
- T-shirts!
- there are a limited number of Hive13 shirts, and a larger number of power tool drag race shirts.
- Previously selling them for $20--sounds like we will stick with that.
- Jim can run credit cards
- would rather not take cash any longer.
- some discussion about giving free shirts to members for volunteering, being awesome, etc.
- Jim--Saw power series racing at maker faire
- this would be good for the hive to do in the future.
- $500 budget max--various rules
- good for experience with motor, bateries, etc.
- promotional piece.
- put $700 of hive money to make this an official hive project?
- Nancy--are there rule changes year to year?
- Jim--some safety rule changes. Like this year, need physical brakes.
- we are automatically invited to new york maker faire.
- there will be one at the atlanta mini maker faire in october.
- expect a vote next week on funding this as an offical project.
- Mike--DIYBIO!
- a few members (Mike, John, Jason) are interested in DIYBio projects.
- meeting next week (aug 5) after update meeting, talk about projects, funding, space, etc.
- Dustin--for changing the bylaws--could change them at a different meeting 6 months after the officer election.
- this would allow new officers to not have to deal with new bylaws too.
- some discussion followed of pros and cons.
- Bylaw meeting can be called at any time if there is quorum.
- Jon--sorta bylawish topic--AREA MANAGERS
- several people have suggested AREA MANAGERS for the Hive
- other spaces do this, it works.
- responsibility for...
- keeping area clean (making sure that people clean up their mess, not being a maid)
- keeping the machines working
- teaching how use equipment.
- 5 areas:
- wood working
- electronics
- fab lab
- dirty room/welding
- lounge/kitchen/common area.
- tentative proposal: area managers get half off their membership dues.
- Do not want to get into implementation details. tonight, but...general thoughts/complaints?
- In a week or two, get a group together and flesh it out.
- Various discussion follows.
- Dave--don't want to fall into the idea that they do the cleaning for everyone else.
- big part of job would be calling people out if they make a mess, rather than just cleaning it.
- Nancy--if someone leaves their stuff lying around...whose responsibility?
- Tiffany--we should have training for the 3D printers!
- Jim S--could probably put something together for gigabot
- Jon--this is the sort of thing that becomes responsibility of area manager.
- John--crazy idea--buy out entire anchor building with kickstarter funding?
- If we are going to buy a building, not this one probably...
- a few people express liking kickstarter idea, when/if we do need to expand.
- Garden Street has bought all these buildings on the strip, unlikely to want to sell.
- Some discussion followed about expanding space..
- Twist--we are not at the point of needing to expand yet. We should define what that point looks like.
- Jim D--laser cutter donation
- Can someone with a pickup trick help Jim move it from Delhi in about 2 weeks?
